Sexual Exploitation and abuse of women
Aurat ne janam diya mardo ko, Mardo ne usay bazar diya
Jab jee chaha masla kuchla, Jab jee chaaha dutkar diya
Tultee hai kahee dinaro mein,
Bikatee hai kahee bazaaro mein
Nangee nachvaayee jaatee hai, Aiyyasho ke darbaaro mein
Yeh woh beizzat chiz hai jo, bat jaatee hai izzaatdaaro mein
Aurat ne janam diya mardo ko...
Jin hotho ne inako pyaar
kiya, Unn hotho kaa vyopaar kiya
Jis kokh me inaka jism dhala, Uss kokh kaa karobaar kiya
Jis tan se uge kopal ban kar, Uss tan ko jalilo khar kiya
Aurat ne janam diya mardo ko...
The exhibition of sex portrayal in Films and mass Media has assumed alarming proportion and is perpetuating unabated. Women are considered a commodity- a sex object, which is meant to conciliate the lust of perverted men. The use of women in advertisement and in item songs to sell the product is rampant. Filmmakers and advertisers use the sex imagery featuring sexual content in selling a product which has no relationship with the product.
There was a time when the actual creative work was considered provocative and was censored by censorship. Do you know that a song of CID filmed on Wahida Rehman and sung by Geeta Dutt was censored? The song was, Jaata kahaan hai deewane Sab kuch yahan hai sanam Baaki ke saare fasaaneJhoote hain teri kasam, Fifi, kuch tere dil mein fifi kuch mere dil mein Zamana Hai Bura. However after a long battle the song was passed. Guru Dutt was asked to remove a short from Chaudhi ka chand, where Wahida Rahman’s eyes were looking red and was tantamounting to sensuality and now is the time when hardcore porn is approved. Shit is produced and sold by using the unsettling sense of men and the faculty of brain which attracts porn and lust. This fundamental weakness of men is greatly being exploited for en-chasing the dividends.
The sex drive associated is characterized by craving for sexual gratification. This influences and motivates the filmmakers to exploit the dignity of woman by exposing women to nudity to peddle the crap. “When a woman veils her body in modest clothing, she is not hiding herself from men. On the contrary, she is revealing her dignity to them.” We are still a male dominant society where the closet of film making started by a villain dominating role who was trying to force upon on the heroine, was considered a success formula. The film making is still the same. Rape is replaced by double meaning songs nudity and the buff. Woman is ready, to shed every inch of her clothing, to gratify the carnal desires of men and men too are shedding their clothes to reveal the sexy six packs to reveal the carnal desires of woman for the primitive reasons.
The item songs are the new low the industry. Now let’s take an example of a vulgar item song of Dabang 2. Main To Tandoori Murgi Hoon Yaar Gatka le Saiyyan Alcohol Se. Mere Photo Ko Seene Se Yaar Chipka Le Saiyan Fevicol Se. The words are absolutely demeaning to the dignity and the integrity of the woman. The Song equates a woman with a Tandoori Murgi . It does not stop here; it provokes men to hover on her after drinking alcohol. What type of film making is this? Now let’s see an advertisement of J. K. Super Cement where a woman comes out from the sea waves to the sea shore in a bikini. It says Vishwas hai, isme kuch khass hai. In other words it suggest that under the two piece which the woman is wearing, you are bound to be sure that there is something special. How that something special is related to cement? Now let’s review the other advertisement of underwear “Amul Macho” where a woman washes the underwear in the most provocative manner. The advertisement is highly Obnoxious, provocative and offensive. Now let’s see the Tuff Shoe Advertisement where Milind Soman and Madhu sapre posed absolutely naked wearing tuff shoes. What is a shoe to do with being naked? The entire masculinity of men is confined to perfumes seducing attractive women. Advertisers show creepy stuff with layers of sexuality mixed in, to show how women are getting attracted to them. How stupid can the audience get by succumbing to the creepy and weird commercials and item songs?
My counter Opinion: I do not endorse the vulgar and loutish songs, or the sexually explicit advertisements, displayed in a bawdy manner to kindle a craving, which is absolutely temporary and transient. We do not remember the creepy vulgar movies or the advertisements for too long. The greatest of the Bollywood movies, were targeted to middle class audience who have watched and enjoyed the movies with their families. Films Like Anand, Guide, Golmaal( Old), Chupke Chupke, Massom, Tesri Kasam, Sholay, Mother India, Mughal-E-Azam, Pyasa, Taare Zameen par were family oriented movies. Now let’s talk of the advertisements which have left an indelible imprint on us. The Puddle war of a brother in a surf excel commercial gives me a Goosebumps. After fighting it all in the dirty mud beating the puddle where the clothes of the sibling getting dirty with the mud ends in glee” sorry bol raha hai”. The other advertisement which have taken me to the memory lanes were the famous “ Dhara Jalebi Comercial” where the child leaves the home saying “sab Ghussa karte Hain” I am leaving the home, the uncle reminds him that in his home” Jalebi’s are made” and the Child retorts with Jalebiiiiii brings the simplicity and innocence of the child. Amul ads are universally appealing. The funny commercial of candyman is one more example. Where the man asks a child to check if his car does not get hit while reversing his car, the child innocently and bravely suggests coming down further finally saying “Ab Lag Gaya” is an expression of real commercial making.
Finally, it is not necessary to offer the wandering lust the cut-rate commodity to satiate the hankering. The film and commercial makers should behave responsibly to produce a better future as the world gets highly influenced by films. Quoting G. B. Shaw. ‘We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future’.
