The Pain of being an exceptional Talent- Meena Kumari

Who would wish a person to die of the agony and cruel reality of life? But the fellow actress Nargis did. She wished and hailed death of Mahjabeen Bano aka’ Meena Kumari’ Shortly after her death, fellow actress Nargis wrote a personal essay in an Urdu magazine – Shama, entitled "Meena – Maut Mubarak Ho". This was the immense love and respect for the actress who was deeply hurt by the society and abused by the husband Kamal Amrohi.  Meena Kumari was a great human being. All time, the best actress of India and a poetess par excellence.

If Dilip Kumar was the tragedy King of India, Meena Kumari was the tragedy quee.. Unlike Dilip kumar, she was the tragedy queen of real life too. We see the reflection of gloom and sadness, which was visibly present  in her own poetry.

“Dil ko kaise samjhayen ki raat Guzarne wali hai. Bas raat ki baat hi sari hai aur raat guzarne wali hai.”

In reel life, Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam, when Chhoti Bahu's repeated attempts to appease her husband fail until she becomes his drinking companion to keep him by her side. In her real life too she chooses the alcohol, the drinking partner for constantly being abused by Kamal Amrohi. The Paranoid husband of Meena Kumari,  Amrohi not only abused her but spied on her even to her makeup room making her life extremely difficult to live.

He got her abused by his relatives and even by stupid assistant Baqar Ali. Baqar Ali slapped Meena Kumari when she allowed Gulzar to enter her make up room. After being repeatedly mortified and humiliated by Kamal Amohi, she preferred to live separately. Such was the inferiority complex of Kamal Amrohi that during a premiere at Eros cinema, Sohrab Modi  introduced Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi to the governor of Maharashtra. Sohrab Modi said "This is the renowned actress Meena Kumari, and this is her husband Kamal Amrohi". Whereupon before greetings were exchanged, Kamal Amrohi interjected: "No, I am Kamal Amrohi and this is my wife, the renowned actress Meena Kumari". Saying this, Kamal Amrohi left the auditorium. Meena Kumari saw the premiere alone.

When thunderstorms roll in, you make a choice to either succumb with tears to the gloomy downpour, or smile and look for rainbows. But her gloom of deception was so intense, that life did not give her second option to live. Like every mother, she wanted to become the one. But her dream never got fulfilled either, Since Meena Kumari was the second wife of Amrohi, he refused to have a child from her infuriating her grief further. She took to sleeping pills and alcohol and succumbed to cirohis of liver because of excessive alcohol consumption.

Before finally dying she recorded her grief in her poetry.  Which she was writing and handed over  to Gulzar Sahab before her death..She wote

Tukde- tukde din beeta, dhajji- dhajji daat miliJiska jitna aanchal tha utni hi saugat mili

At just 38...The industry lost the iconic actress, world lost a great human being and the literates a great poet.

As  Mahjabeen Bano, Meena Kumari was the greatest actress of all times. who went through so much in a life that lasted only for 38 years.

In a career spanning 33 years, she starred in about 92 films such as Pakeezah, Sahib Bibi air Ghulam, Baiju Bawra, Dil apna preet prayer

Finally concluding with one more poetic expressions of anguish.

Abla-pe koi, is dasht mein aaya hoga

varna aandhi mein diya kis ne jalaya hoga.
